In a new public interest venture, Sullivan & Cromwell has joined forces with The Goldman Sachs Group and Harvard Law School to look at, and attempt to come up with concrete answers for an age old problem, the ever widening gap between young black men and their white peers. The venture, known as the Pipeline Crisis/Winning Strategies initiative, is attempting to focus resources from all sectors on the plight of the African American urban poor. Examining all the factors - education, economic distress, and legal issues, Sullivan & Cromwell was able to draw the attention of many prominent members in the field to help them wrestle with the problems at hand. Speakers including congressman Charles Rangel and Charles Ogletree, Jr., director of Harvard's Charles Hamilton Houston Institute for Race & Justice, joined over 1,100 enthusiastic people who attended the forum. While there is no shortage of antipoverty efforts, this initiative singles itself out as a unique way of bringing all the key players together to address a difficult issue.
