In House at The American Lawyer

The focus of the article is “The inability of large law firms to draw in from the summer associates pool, members of minority background.” Known by many as the “pipeline" problem, this is another look at supply and demand. Many organizations have looked at this problem, written about it, but not fully taken the issue head on. This is why the recent meetings sponsored by Sullivan & Cromwell and Goldman Sachs have been so significant. The project known as “The Pipeline Crisis: Closing the Achievement Gap for Young Black Men”, has held two sessions, inviting academics and scholars as well as members of the philanthropic and social service areas to join in addressing this serious problem. While the sessions seem ambitious, they are broken out to deal with the systemic issues for all aspects of the problem. The aim is clear, to quote William Snipes of Sullivan & Cromwell, “We want to tackle America’s growing social problem, we want to affect diversity in the workplace.”
